STB Stress Testing

Stress test is used to test stability and performance of Set Top Boxes driven beyond normal operation capacity. It is used for testing of STB complex features, and puts greater emphasis on robustness, availability, and error handling, under a heavy load rather than on what would be considered correct behavior under normal circumstances.

BBT STB Stress Testing system consists of 44U high 19" rack for more in-depth and large-in-scale, thorough, set-top box testing of up to 16 STB devices in parallel.

The system is intended for testing in test laboratories as well as within live network.

19" rack for 16 Set Top Box Stress Test system environment contains:

  • 44U high metal rack with additional equipment (trays, cabling paths, ventilation, etc) to acquire 16 STB devices
  • Grabber devices. For real time signal capture 4, 8 or 16 RT-AV100 devices are used, depending on the system configuration. RT-AV100 control library is responsible for communication with the capture devices. This part of the system is customizable for use in other environments and different grabbers.
  • DekTec digital-video interfacing device is used to feed the devices with test signal. The system is customizable for use with other signaling cards and generators.
  • Remote Controller (RC) Emulators for STB control
  • PC for execution and control. BBT control application (RT-EXECUTOR) is in charge of controlling devices under test, signaling card, real time signal capture, analysis, logging results in a database, document generation and reporting within local area network. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) library implements TTX/MHEG, OSD, and sub-title testing procedures. Picture comparison and quality estimation algorithms are implemented within PBC library.
  • Referent STB device (optional). The system can be used in referent or no-referent test environments.
  • Monitor for STB state preview, Keyboard, Network Switch
  • Cabling infrastructure (AV signals (CVBS, YPbPr, HDMI, Analog and digital audio), RF cabling, Power cabling with power control)

Once Set Top Boxes are mounted in the rack, they are controlled via RC emulator and power supply. BBT control application runs on Microsoft™ Windows® PC, and gathers all audio and video data captured in real time, for logging and further analysis. The system provides thorough documentation on the course of testing and the obtained test results, and is scalable for single or multiple devices testing.
